Today I'm gonna share to you what I had read from the book named "Cappadocia" where Murat E. Gülyaz is the archaeologıst and İrfan Ölmez, the photo/ guide.
I found this book at the old book shelves of my hubby when we were in Ürgüp, visiting my parents-in-law, also it was a yearly celebration called "Kurban Bayramlar" means "sacrificing the life of an animal" , either sheep, pig, cow etc. It is celebrated at the 3rd week of October.
Anyways, let's go back to the main topic.
Cappadocia is a place located at the center of the country of Turkey. It is one of the most visited places here.
In Cappadocia, you will find a lot of unbelievable rock formations which really amaze you once you saw it (as I did). They called it , "Fairy Chimney".
What is Fairy Chimney?
It is a unique rock formation created by the lava of Mount Erciyes, Hasandağ and Göllüdağ (these were active volcanoes between the early Miocene and the Pliocene periods (10-2 million years ago).
How do Fairy Chimneys created?
The lava produced by the volcanoes mentioned above formed a layer of tufa on the plateaus, lakes and rivers which varied in hardness and was between 100 and 150 m thick. There's also ignimbrite, soft tufa stone, tufa, lahar, ash, clay, marn, basalt, sandstone, and other agglomerates in the layer.
The tuff layer has slowly, but yet steadily been eroded to produce rock formations with the action of smaller, secondary volcanoes and the action of rivers, wind and flood waters.
Water swept all the softer, easily eroded materials underneath by creating cracks and ruptures in the hard rock through valleys. After this process, the side of the rock have thinned out and those conical formations protected with basalt caps have been created.
The cone is constructed from tufa and volcanic ashes while the caps is very hard, more resistant rock such as lahar or ignimbrite.
What it's looks like?
Some rocks looks like mushroom like pillar, some are cones, caps, and just pointed rocks.
Where do these rocks located?
Fairy Chimneys are generally found in the valleys in the Uçhisar - Ürgüp to Avanos triangle, between Ürgüp and Şahinefendi, around the town of Çat in Nevşehir, in the Soğanlı valley and in the village of Selime in Aksaray.
How long dooes the life of Fairy Chimney?
It's life is depending on it's protected caps.
YEAH! So that's all I wanna say about Fairy Chimneys in Cappadocia but I still have a lot to share to you about Cappadocia so just stay tune and thanks for reading...
